Inheritance

Inspired by photographs of the restoration of Fondazione Giorgio Cini, displayed in this room, this exhibition focuses on the value of inherited knowledge, an enriching part of the human experience. On the ceiling, a video installation depicts ten artisan families around the world where craft skills and traditions are passed down from generation to generation. From Italy to Uzbekistan to South Africa, the videos invite us to step into the worlds of soap makers, stone inlayers, ceramicists, shoemakers and doll makers, glimpsing the tools, materials and techniques that are preserved and perpetuated within these family businesses. Some of the beautiful and accomplished objects created by these and other artisan families are displayed around the room.
